   :: Cultural Advice

Excerpted from the Austria Career Guide

Austria’s official language is German, although most people speak a dialect with some small variations. Depending upon the dialect, some words have slightly different meanings and there are additional expressions in the language. Dictionaries are available that discuss the differences between German and Austrian dialects. It is useful to know some of the basic Austrian expressions, in addition to the German language. A good deal of business is conducted in English, as English is spoken in business and in governmental sectors; however, Austrians appreciate visitors who are acquainted with the native language and who have learned key phrases.

Austrians themselves should not be automatically confused with the Germans. They are distinctively different and will be offended if this rule of etiquette is not observed.

This is just a sample of what you'll find in the complete Austria guide.
