Engineering and automobile companies in Austria posted
record-setting profits in recent years, but this did not mean more
industrial jobs. Wolfgang Damianisch, head of the industry division
at the Austrian Chamber of Commerce (WKÖ), said that the number of
employees in Austrian industry recently declined by 0.81 %,
or 3,368 workers. The number of so-called white-collar employees
declined by 0.45 % and the number of workers fell by 1 %.
He described this as the "process of deindustrialization"
which occurs despite increasing production and exports. This erosion
of the manufacturing base, common in EU countries, was evidenced in
a number of recent Austrian layoffs in which companies announced
downsizing and outsourcing to Eastern Europe. Although most likely
manufacturing jobs will be affected first, engineering jobs have a
tendency to follow the plants over time. Perhaps because of its
geographic proximity, Austrian headquarter companies will keep the
engineering jobs in the country, within commuting range of bordering
Eastern European plants.
