Excerpted from the Italy Career Guide
Engineers, like IT professionals, most frequently find employment in the northern regions of Italy. Electrical and mechanical engineers tend to join firms as permanent employees, while civil and construction engineers freelance.
The Italian civil engineering sector is worth approximately $24.7 billion, while the construction and engineering market in Italy yields $62 billion. The bulk of construction revenues come from the construction of non-residential buildings. The construction and engineering sector has grown faster than other European countries in recent years, giving Italy an11 percent share of the European market. Strong growth is expected in the immediate future as well because of strong governmental investment in civil engineering projects. In 2009, the market is forecasted to be $82 billion. While employment in the construction industry increased by 15 percent over three years, it is now expected to level off. This might mean fewer jobs among the industry leaders such as Impregilo, Snamporogetti and Astaldi.
This is just a sample of what you'll find in the complete Italy guide.
