  The IT industry in Italy is located predominantly in the northern part of the country with more than 66 percent of employees working in either the northwest (41 percent) or northeast (25 percent). According to Federcomin, the sector employs 4.4 percent of Italy’s total workforce. By mid 2004, there were an estimated 100,000 information and communication technology firms located in Italy. According to US market research company IDC, the bulk of IT companies in Italy are smaller. Approximately 68 percent have five or fewer employees, 92 percent have fewer than 20 employees and 97 percent fewer than 50 employees.
