The biomedical sciences (BMS) industry, including pharmaceutical, biotechnology, medical device and healthcare service companies, is becoming a fast-growing industry in Singapore. Singapore's biomedical output recently exceeded its annual target of SGD 12 billion. With government plans to double this to SGD 24 billion within the next 10 years, as many as 15,000 new BMS jobs might be created. This job creation is consistent with past performance -- over the last four years employment in the biomedical sector has increased 35%.
The biomedical sciences industry's manufacturing output recently grew to SGD 15.8 billion, a 33.2% increase over the prior year. Employment over the same period grew 6.7% from 8,642 to 9,225 employees. Pharmaceuticals contributed SGD 13.9 billion (88%) of the total, with medical technology making the remainder (SGD 1.9 billion). Employment in the pharmaceutical sector increased 7.4% to a total of 3,851 employees, while employment in medical technology increased 6.2% to a total of 5,374 employees.
