22,600 Foreigners Studying Here

By Kang Shin-who
Staff Reporter, The Korean Time

The number of foreign students and professors at Korean universities continue to increase.

According to statistics by the Ministry of Education and Human Resources Development, the number of foreign students jumped 5.7-folds to 22,624 in 2006 from 3,963 in 2000. Also full-time foreign professors doubled two times from 1,313 in 2000 to 2,540 in 2006.

By nationality, Chinese students form the biggest group among foreign students marking 65 percent.

Five percent and 3 percent of the students are from Japan and Taiwan, respectively.

By city, Seoul has the biggest number of foreign students with 6,610, followed by North Kyongsang Province with 2,142, Pusan with 2,023, and Taejon with 1,484. However, the ratio of foreign students in Korea is far lower than those of other countries in the world. According to data released last year by OECD, 6.4 percent of foreign students study in other countries against only 0.2 percent in Korea.
